Every year, our prison population increases. The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics website states that for every 100,000 people in the U.S., 486 of them are behind bars. In 2004, the Federal and State prisons housed 2,135,901 inmates, most of which are repeat offenders.

American taxpayers spend nearly one hundred billion dollars every year on our prison system and not even 1% of that goes to helping criminals change their ways. Once they’re released, they are more likely to return to prison than to conform to society.

78.8% of motor vehicle thieves that are released after incarceration are arrested again for the same crime. 2.5% of rapists are arrested again for rape within three years of being released. Unfortunately, the problem is so huge it seems there isn’t anything that can be done about it, but thanks to Car Angel, we’re seeing some changes.

Every year, Car Angel distributes a new book into the prisons encouraging reform and inspiring a change from the inside out. The books tell the reality of the lives these criminals have chosen and tells them how they can escape from a life of destruction, and live as productive members of society.

On average, taxpayers save $160,000,000 a year from inmates who have been changed by our books and have never come back to prison.

Below is an excerpt from Death Sentence, one of the many books that have made a difference in the prisons. Every life is worth saving and thanks to Car Angel, fewer are being lost.
